TRIO FOR TWO
Tenor & lutenist IVO HAUN and lutenist PETER CROTON have joined forces to craft a unique and innovative program titled “Trio for Two: Musings & Improvisations on the Music of John Dowland.” Conceived in honor of the 400th anniversary of Dowland’s passing, this project transcends conventional performance of lute songs & solos by including florid embellishment & self-accompanied song. Through improvised vocal ornamentation and intricate lute divisions, the duo deepens the listener’s engagement with Dowland's compositions, embracing a historically informed practice of ornate musical interpretation celebrating the music's enduring brilliance. Moreover, their imaginative approach enriches the lute repertoire by creating original duets that harmonize seamlessly with the spirit of the era.
Inspired by inventio – a rhetorical principle emphasizing creativity and discovery – Ivo and Peter embrace the role of interpreters as co-creators. In doing so, they aim to recapture the vibrant essence of Dowland’s music, echoing the inventive artistry of performers from his time.
